FAQs

About "Marking"

What materials can be engraved by marking machines?

Vector's marking machines can engrave characters and 2D codes on metals and hard resins.

What kind of character can marking machines mark?

Alphanumeric characters, symbols, 2D codes and logos are available. For details, refer to PRODUCTS page.

Will marked characters wear away?

Because our marking machine makes dimples on the workpiece by vibrating stylus directly (dot peen marking), the marked characters and 2D codes (consist of dimples) will never wear away.

Will workpieces be damaged or distorted by marking operations?

Regardless of character/2D code sizes and workpiece materials, the load of stylus tip on the workpiece is very low.
Our marking machines are widely used to mark on Aluminum parts which distortions are undesirable such as engine parts.

What is the advantage of the air pen?

The air pen can make deep and strong dimples constitute characters and 2D codes. The stylus vibrated by pneumatic pressure strikes workpieces strongly to make dimples. Also, the air pen works regardless of environmental conditions.

What is the advantage of the ultrasonic pen?

The ultrasonic pen can mark smooth lines without noises. The stylus vibrated by energized piezo element strikes workpieces.

What is the advantage of the electromagnetic pen?

The electromagnetic pen can make small dimples by stylus with low impact and mark small characters and 2D codes in the small area. The stylus vibrated by electromagnetic power strikes workpieces.

What is the advantage of the multi-stylus pen?

The multi-stylus pen has four styli and can mark two or more characters at a time. The marking time is dramatically reduced.

What is the difference between dot peen marking and laser marking?

In the laser marking, the laser melts, burns, scratches, oxidizes, engraves and colors the surface of workpiece to make lines which compose characters.
In the dot peen marking, the vibrating stylus strikes the surface of workpiece directly to make dimples which compose characters.
Unlike the laser marking, the dot peen marking does not require safety devices and equipment.
Therefore, the initial cost of machine installation can be cut down.

What is the difference between dot peen marking and ink jet marking?

Unlike the printing (ink jet marker etc.) , characters marked by dot peen marking machines will not wear away by lubricants or similar materials.
Marked characters remain on the surface almost permanently.

What is the advantage of dot peen marker?

Dot peen markers require no special safety equipments. Initial costs will be reduced.

About spec of markers

Can Vector's marking machines mark on curved or undulated surfaces?

If the stylus tip reach to the surface with a sufficient load, characters and 2D codes can be marked.

Can Vector's marking machines mark on rough and hard surfaces such as hardened steel?

In the dot peen marking, the stylus (tip material: cemented carbide or PCD) strikes workpieces directly and make deep and strong dimples on hard workpieces. Though the workpiece surface is very hard and rough such as cast iron workpieces, the stylus can mark fine characters and 2D codes without polishing the workpiece surface beforehand.

How fast can Vector's marking machines mark characters?

The approximate time is 1 second per character (depending on the marker model, font size, etc.). If you want to know actual speed, please apply for the test marking service.

Are pen parts replaceable?

You can replace pen parts (stylus, sleeve, etc.) for prolonged use of the marking machine.

Are pens common for all marking machine models?

Available pens are varied by marking machine models. For details, please consult us.

Is attached PC software available for any marking machine models?

Available PC softs are varied by marking machine models. For details, please consult with us.

What is the stylus tip material?

Cemented carbide is used. Also, sintered PCD is used for some stylus.

Can Vector's marking machines mark original logos and characters?

Original logos and characters are available (optional). Vector makes the character data and stores in the ROM of marking machine beforehand.

Can Vector's marking machines be used out of Japan?

Our products are available out of Japan. For voltage ranges, refer to specifications of each marking machine.

Where are Vector's marking machines made?

Vector's marking machines are designed and manufactured in Japan.

What is the merit to use Vector's marking machines?

We can provide the most suitable model for customers from our rich product lineup.

How loud the noise generated from Vector's marking machine?

According to marking machine models, workpieces and fixing methods of workpieces, the loudness level of noise is varied. Ultrasonic pen models are relatively silent.
If you want to know actual noise level, please apply for the test marking service.

How deep the dot engraved by Vector's marking machine?

According to marking machine models, workpieces and fixing methods of workpieces, the depth will be varied. VM3770A High-power Pen Marking Machine features deep engraving.
If you want to know actual depth of marked dots, please apply for the test marking service.

Is there anything to be considered in safety use of marking machines?

Do not place any part of body in the pen's operating range. Safety covers are not necessary.

What is necessary to set parameters for marking machines?

Use Windows PC and the attached software. Connect the PC and the marking machine with USB cables or RS-232C cables. Instead of PCs, VM7891/1891 Operating Unit is also available.

Are PLCs available for control of marking machines?

Machine control by PLC via serial and parallel interfaces is available. For details, please consult with us.

What is "Pen stroke"?

We call the distance between the tip of the stylus at the top and at the bottom as "Pen stroke".

What is "Job"?

We call a set of parameters for marking (character string, size, marking start position etc.) as "Job".

What is "Sequence"?

We call a program (a set of commands and "Jobs") as "Sequence". There are many commands: standard character marking, 2D code marking, pen positioning, etc.

What is "Increment"?

We call the serial number marking fuinction as "Increment".

What is "Calendar marking"?

We call the current date and hour marking as "Calendar marking".

What is "Circular marking" and "Angular marking"?

We call the function to engrave a characterstring along a circular arc path as "Circular marking". Also, we call the function to engrave a character string at angles as "Angular marking".

What is "Special character"?

We call a custom-made font or logo for marking machine as "Special character".

What types of ports does the marking machine have?

Parallel port, serial (RS-232) port, USB port and Ethernet port. (varied according to marking machine models)

What is "Operating unit"?

"Operating unit" is used to set up and operate marking machines on production site. Data in the marking machine can be backed up in the operating unit. Alarm history of the marking machine can also be checked.
